FIFA Confederation Cup Finals Game Replay: Brazil won over USA

Brazil won the game against USA with 3-2 goals in the FIFA Confederation Cup Finals last Sunday June 28, 2009.

Brazil deserves its place around the top of the world soccer table. Luis Fabiano was prolific with his shots on goal (and goals, collecting the Golden Boot) and Kaka, Robinho and Maicon slowly took over the midfield, building a rising tide of attacks. This win reaffirms Brazil’s timeless dominance of international soccer, but also announces the U.S.’s potential, playing well in their first major tournament final. We’ll see if that potential can be transferred to wins by the time the team likely makes it back to South Africa at next year’s World Cup.

The Confederations Cup final in Johannesburg is the biggest event for the U.S. in South Africa since Paul Simon’s Graceland album release in 1986. For Brazil, it’s just another game. Consider this: Today’s match is the first time the U.S. has been in the final of a major FIFA tournament. For Brazil? Well, this is their fourth time in the Confederations Cup final. And the 2009 event is only the sixth Confederations Cup, so it’s fair to say Brazil has dominated the competition.

Brazil brings a strong lineup of one-named phenoms. Kaka and Robinho are two. Their game plan will likely be unchanged from the first meeting with an emphasis on speed and precision passing.

Watch Online: Manny Pacquiao vs Miguel Cotto

Pacquiao needs to engage world welterweight champion Miguel Cotto in an intelligent fight in order to win.Pacquiao is already 30 years old while Cotto, the reigning World Boxing Organization (WBO) welterweight champion, is 28 years old.

Being the undisputed face of boxing, Pacquiao is a certified box-office and pay-per-view star and this is the main reason why Mosley, Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Juan Manuel Marquez have been itching to be rewarded with a date with a Pacquiao fight, noted Arum, who inked Pacquiao to a lucrative contract in late-2006 following the Filipino’s twin demolition job on erstwhile Top Rank top talent Erik Morales.

Roach has started doing his homework in anticipation of a big match between Manny Pacquiao and Miguel Cotto on Nov. 14 in Las Vegas.

Pacquiao should concentrate on the body if he wants to chop down Cotto early. Nacho Beristain, the Mexican trainer, believes that Cotto may go down in six rounds.

Roach is fully aware that every victory that Manny have is always watered down by experts with many excuses. Once again, he pointed out that Miguel is big, strong and young.

Mosley wants to fight Pacquiao

Shane Mosley offers a perfect scenario, Mosley calls for fight that whoever wins will get to face the winner of the Floyd Mayweather Jr vs Juan Manuel Marquez showdown. The powerhouse showdown has been recently postponed and tentatively rescheduled to September. This means more time to over think it over.

"Yeah, that is the perfect scenario. That’s the way it is supposed to happen in real boxing," said Mosley, the 38-year-old WBA welterweight champion from California, told fighthype.com as he continued to beg for a fight with Pacquiao.

Mosley has practically swallowed everything in seeking the fight with Pacquiao, announcing that he’s agreeable to a catchweight under 147 lb (the welterweight limit), put his belt on the line, and settle for 40 percent of the earnings.

While, Miguel Cotto, WBO welterweight champion, is Top Rank president Bob Arum's choice to be Manny Pacquiao’s next opponent on Nov. 14, is quite hesitant, saying he can only fight Pacquiao at 145 lb. Pacquiao should get no less than 65 percent of everything if ever he agrees tp fight Cotto, who just came off with a victory over Josh Clottey.

Mosley is saying that he’s better than Cotto, and even Pacquiao. Which may be true enough, as experts think Mosley can give the reigning pound-for-pound champion a tougher fight than Cotto on the ring.

Pacquiao has been wanting to fight with Mayweather, and if the fight with Cotto pushes through, and he wins, then the undefeated Champion and former-pound-for-pound king will definitely be next in line.

Manny Pacquiao is No. 6 from the list of Forbes' Highest Paid Athletes of the World

Manny Pacquiao is one of the Forbes’ highest-paid athletes. He is at no. 6 from the list for earning $40 million in the past 12 months. He is the highest ranked newcomer joining sports icons like Tiger Woods, Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant and David Beckham.

Pacquiao tied with the NBA Most Valuable Player LeBron James and golfer Phil Mickelson who also raked in $40 million last year.

People’s Champ also debuted in the recent “Forbes Celebrity 100” list topped by Angelina Jolie. The list named the 100 most powerful celebrities in the world.

He is also debuted in Time Magazine’s “100 Most Influential People” this year after receiving more than 20 million online votes. He was ranked 22nd in the list even though he received the most number of votes.

Highest-paid athletes of the World

Tiger Woods remains a sports’ highest paid athlete with an annual income two and a half times larger than his closest competitor. The world’s top golfer made $110 million during the past 12 months and is the best-paid sportsman for the eighth year.

Nike is by far Woods’ biggest benefactor with an annual payday of more than $30 million for the golfer. Woods profits from the success of the company’s golf division, and last year sales for Nike Golf hit a record $725 million. Woods’ most lucrative new endeavor is his golf course design business. Last year he announced plans for a third course to be built in Mexico. His other courses in Dubai and North Carolina are currently under construction.

Drop-offs from last year include boxer Floyd Mayweather (has not fought since December 2007), NFL players Ben Roethlisberger and Dwight Freeney (both made the 2008 list after inking contracts with big signing bonuses) and Formula One driver Fernando Alonso (just missed the cut).

The highest-ranking of the four newcomers to the list is boxer Manny Pacquiao who earned $40 million over the last year, tied for the sixth most. Pacquiao cemented his claim as the world’s best pound-for-pound fighter with convincing knockouts of Oscar De La Hoya in December and Ricky Hatton in May. The two blockbuster fights garnered more than 2 million pay-per-view buys in the U.S. and earned Pac-Man $30 million combined.

Pacquiao’s massive popularity in his native Philippines is why companies like Nike and San Miguel beer have signed him to endorse their products. Pacquiao intends to use that popularity to run for political office when his ring career is over.

The 20 highest earners have a very international flavor with Pacquiao one of eight non-Americans on the list. Finnish Formula One driver Kimi Raikkonen earned $45 million over the past year, tied for second on our list with hoop legends Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant. Right behind that trio is global icon David Beckham who earned $42 million playing for the Los Angeles Galaxy and AC Milan.

Manny Pacquiao as 2008 Fighter of the Year

The US writers honor Pacquiao as the 2008 Fighter of the Year, he received the award in New York last friday night, he will join the ranks of Muhammad Ali, Joe Frazier, Sugar Ray Leonard and Evander Holyfield if he will continue to shine this 2009.

Boxing Writers Association of America started giving the award in 1938, Jack Dempsey won it, the year heavyweight. So far the only fighters to have won the award three times since the association started are Ali, Frazier, Leonard and Holyfield.

Pacquiao has won the BWAA top plum four times. No fighter in history won the award. He was the BWAA top fighter in 2006, when he knocked out Erik Morales twice, and was named the best for 2008, the year he defeated Juan Manuel Marquez, David Diaz and Oscar dela Hoya in different weight classes.

He is scheduled to fight in October, and whether it’s against Floyd Mayweather Jr., Miguel Cotto or Shane Mosley, another victory may just seal it for the 30-year-old pound-for-pound champion.

He almost missed gracing the BWAA awards night at the Capitale in New York, and had to take a late flight to the Big City from Manila Friday morning. He was in New York just hours before the 7:30 p.m. affair.

In his acceptance speech, where he spoke fluently in English, aided by a teleprompter, Pacquiao said it was “a great honor” to be chosen as the top fighter for 2008. “It is for this reason that I chose to travel half across the globe to personally receive this award tonight,” he added. He came with his wife, Jinkee.

“I also hope that this award will serve as an example and an inspiration for the young fighters to believe in themselves and keep on dreaming big. Always remember, your dreams will always be inside you. No one can take it away." Pacquiao said.

He praised the BWAA for its “long existence” and looked at the members in saying “you have passed the test of time.” He was given a standing ovation as he prepared to accept the award.

Swine Flu Vaccine now Available

Swiss pharmaceutical company Novartis AG said that they successfully produced a swine flu vaccine weeks ahead of their expectations. The vaccine was made in cells, rather than grown in eggs as is usually the case with vaccines.

The World Health Organization declared swine flu as pandemic. The drugmakers will likely have vaccines approved and ready for sale after September as WHO says.
UN health officials declared that Swine flu, also known as Influenza A(H1N1), is now formally a pandemic. WHO announced that the virus spread is any more lethal but it's spread is considered unstoppable. The move indicates that a global outbreak is under way.

The Novartis company said that the first batch of vaccine will be used for pre-clinical evaluation and testing and being considered for clinical trials.

Dr. Margaret Chan, WHO chief made the long-awaited declaration after the UN agency held an emergency meeting with the flu experts and said that the flu was moving to phase 6 – the agency’s highest alert level – which means a pandemic is under way.

Chan said “The world is moving into the early days of its first influenza pandemic in the 21st century,”

The virus can still be deadly and may change into a more frightening form in the near future, and so people should not be complacent Dr. Thomas Frieden, the new head of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said.
Swine flu so far has caused 144 deaths, compared with ordinary flu that kills up to 500,000 people a year.

To make pandemic vaccine is a gamble decision. Most of the flu vaccine makers cannot make both regular seasonal flu vaccine and pandemic vaccine at the same time. That means they must decide which one the world will need more.

WHO described the pandemic as “moderate.” WHO flu chief Keiji Fukuda said that the people should not get overly anxious about the virus. He said that the people should “Understand it, put it in context, and then you get on with things,”

Swine flu continuing to spread during the start of summer in the northern hemisphere. Normally, flu viruses disappear with warm weather, but swine flu is proving to be resilient.

“What this declaration does do is remind the world that flu viruses like H1N1 need to be taken seriously,” said US Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius, warning that more cases could crop up in the fall.

Now that a pandemic has been declared, some countries might be prompted to devote more money to containing the virus. Many developed countries have pandemic preparedness plans that link spending to a WHO declaration.

The UN is keen to avoid panic. “We must guard against rash and discriminatory action, such as travel bans or trade restrictions,” said UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.

NHL Stanley Cup Final: Penguins Beat Red Wings 4-3

The Penguins entered Friday's finals game full of confidence. Even with the records against them, despite the fact that only one team in the history of the NHL had won a Game 7 on the road in the Stanley Cup Final, These Pittsburgh kids came out with big hearts.

The Penguins wins 2-1 a heart breaking Game 7 against the defending champion Red Wings at Joe Louis Arena with the weight of history conspiring against them.

"We heard all these stupid stats about how a team hadn't done 0-2 since 1971 or something and all these other Game 7 stats," defenseman Brooks Orpik told NHL.com "But I thought we just did a good job of blocking all that out and staying confident the whole series." That confidence was the best thing the Penguins have.

After a scoreless and somewhat tame first period, Pittsburgh took the lead early in the second on the first of Max Talbot's two goals. Talbot was in perfect position to score over the turnover by Detroit defenseman Brad Stuart. Once he had the puck on his stick, he just ladled it between the leg pads of Detroit goalie Chris Osgood at 1:13. Almost nine minutes later, Talbot scored again. This time, he pounced on chip pass by teammate Chris Kunitz to lead a 2-on-1 against Detroit defenseman Niklas Kronwall. Talbot avoid the pass and fired a wrister from about 15 feet that zipped over Osgood's glove and nestled into the far corner.

With Crosby on the shelf after injuring his knee in a collision with Johan Franzen in the second, centers Evgeni Malkin, who was named the Conn Smythe Trophy winner, and Jordan Staal played huge minutes.

NBA Finals 2009: LA Lakers beat Orlando Magic in Game 4

Los Angeles Lakers beat the Orlando Magic 99-91 to take a 3-1 series lead in the NBA Finals. The Magics, who has missed 14 free throw attempts in regulation, missed the chance to tie the series at two apiece.

The Magic built their biggest lead of the series in the second quarter, going up by 12 points as Orlando was imposing its will on the Lakers, taking a 49-37 advantage into the halftime dressing room.

As hot as Kobe Bryant was in the first quarter on Tuesday night in Game 3, that's how inconsistent he seemed through one tonight. Bryant scored 13 points on 4 of 7 shooting. Only three other Lakers have scored.

In Game 4 tonight, look for the Orlando Magic to stick with the same kind of guard rotation it did in Game 3, a 108-104 victory in which starting point guard Rafer Alston got the bulk of the playing time while scoring 20 points in 37 minutes on the floor against the Los Angeles Lakers.

All-Star point guard Jameer Nelson, who returned for the NBA Finals after missing half the regular season with a shoulder injury, was limited to 11 minutes Tuesday night. Mickael Pietrus, who got into foul difficulty in the first two games, played 31 minutes Tuesday night and scored 18 points off the bench.

One team is trying to win for dominance and control, the other team is just trying to win to survive. The Los Angeles Lakers hold a 1-0 series lead against the Orlando Magic and are trying to make it 2-0 as they lead the Magic 40-35 at halftime of Game 2 of their best of seven series. The Lakers are making a balanced attack, with no one scoring in double digits. Lamar Odom and Pau Gasol lead the team in scoring with 7 points apiece, Kobe Bryant and Trevor Ariza have 6, and Derek Fisher and Andrew Bynum each have 5. The Magic on the other hand are hanging on the shoulders of one man, Rashard Lewis. Lewis has a game high 20 points at the half with no signs of letting up. Although this is a good sign for Rashard, this isn't exactly the best news for Magic coach Stan Van Gundy, as the next best scorer for the game is Dwight Howard with 4 points. Red Wings Wins Game 5 over Pittsburgh

Defending champion Detroit Red Wings wins over the Pittsburgh team in Saturday night's Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Final at Joe Louis Arena. authoring a 5-0 victory that puts the Red Wings on the precipice of their 12th Stanley Cup. Detroit has won 11 of 12 home games at "The Joe" this postseason.

The Cup champions showed their class, especially during the first 15 minutes of the second period when Detroit turned a nail-biting 1-0 lead into a statement game. The final three goals of the outburst all came on the power play, which had been dormant throughout the first four games of the series.
Detroit goalie Chris Osgood, who had allowed seven goals in the past two games, turned in a 22-save shutout.
But it was Zetterberg, the player most often verbally targeted by a Pittsburgh team that was clearly feeling its oats after putting the defending champions on the ropes after the two wins at Mellon Arena, who stole the show. He assisted on the first power-play goal and scored the game's final goal, also on the power play.

It should be noted that the Red Wings weren't ready right away Saturday night.

Pittsburgh dominated the first few minutes of the game, looking like the team that used its speed and youth to put up three goals in a six-minute span of Game 4 to turn a 2-1 Detroit lead into a 4-2 come-from-behind victory that made the Wings look a tad vulnerable.

David Carradine found dead in a Bangkok hotel room

A Veteran actor David Carradine has been found dead last thursday in a Bangkok hotel room.
The 72-year-old actor appeared to have hanged himself in a suite at the luxury Swissotel Nai Lert Park Hotel, said Lt. Teerapop Luanseng, the officer responsible for investigating the death. He was in Thailand filming his latest film Stretch, according to his personal manager Chuck Binder. He had several other projects lined up after the action film, which was being directed by Charles De Meaux with Carradine in the lead.

"I can confirm that we found his body, naked, hanging in the closet," Teerapop said. He said police were investigating and suspected suicide, though one of his managers questioned that theory.

"All we can say is, we know David would never have committed suicide," said Tiffany Smith, of Binder & Associates, his management company. "We're just waiting for them to finish the investigation and find out what really happened. He really appreciated everything life has to give ... and that's not something David would ever do to himself."

Mr Binder said the news was "shocking", adding: "He was full of life, always wanting to work... a great person."

Carradine was best known for his role in the 1970s TV series Kung Fu and confirmed his icon status when he played villain Bill in Quentin Tarantino's Kill Bill movies.

Watch Online: Los Angeles Lakers wins Game 1 NBA Finals

The Lakers dominate NBA Finals, Game 1, besting the Magic 100-75 to take the early series lead. They blew it open in the second quarter by thwarting the Magic on 10 of 11 possessions in one stretch, turning a five-point deficit into a seven-point bulge. By the end, Orlando shot just 29.9 percent, the lowest rate for any team in any game during this year's postseason.

It's easy to point to live-by-the-three, die-by-the-three as the reason for the letdown. Bt Orlando finished 8-for-23 from downtown. That's 34.8 percent -- just a shade off its 38.1 clip in the regular season.

It was actually the twos that hurt them. The Magic shot 27.7 percent from inside the arc, as the Lakers were able to unhitch Dwight Howard's anchor in the middle. If you cut the head off the beast the rest of its body will flail.
The Magic scored less than 80 points just once before all season -- an 82-73 loss to the Nuggets back in February. Some of the numbers from that game are eerily similar to Thursday; Orlando was 22-for-29 from the foul line and shot 30.4 percent from the field overall. But the glaring difference between that stinkfest and Game 1 was that Orlando had 23 turnovers, so the point total was self-inflicted.

Orlando took care of the ball on Thursday but couldn't match the Lakers' effort. "We played with a lot of energy," Kobe Bryant said. "Guys are working hard. That's all you can ask for when you played against the Orlando Magic."

Jackson said L.A. was able to stop penetration and limit the drive-and-kick opportunities for Jameer Nelson, Rafer Alston and Hedo Turkoglu.
Their second-leading scorer was even worse. Rashard Lewis shot just 2-for-10. Gasol owned the power forward matchup with 16 points, eight rebounds, three assists and two blocks compared to eight, five, zero and zero for Lewis.

The surprise of all surprises in the tournament is an 11-year-old Filipina who clinched one of the qualifying slots to join the world’s best lady billiard players.

Sixth grader Gillian Go from the Jubilee Christian Academy in Quezon City was unheard of in the local pool circuit until she beat a much older Hyun J-won of South Korea, 7-5 in a deciding match of the second qualifying tournament last Sunday at Paeng's Skybowl in Robinson's Galleria, Pasig.

The basketball and badminton enthusiast likes the way world men's champions Efren "Bata" Reyes pushes the ball, Django Bustamante's relaxed manner of play, his flyers and floaters and the tie-breakers of Ga Young-kim.Chicago-based Zara del Rosario, who traces her roots in Catarman, Samar, will also don the RP tricolors, along with fellow Fil-Am model-turned-professional pool player Shanelle Loraine and Jennifer Seaver.

Angelina Jolie World's Most Powerful Celebrity

She's rich. She's talented. She's beautiful. And now Angelina Jolie is the most powerful celebrity in the world.

Winfrey drops to No. 2 on the list. The media maven has pocketed $275 million in the last year, making her the list's top earner. Though viewership for her daily chat fest, "The Oprah Winfrey Show," continues to erode, her earnings remain unchanged from a year ago. In addition to Winfrey's monthly magazine, she has a three-year, $55 million deal with XM Satellite Radio. Early next year, the self-made billionaire will roll out the lifestyle-themed Oprah Winfrey Network in partnership with Discovery Communications.

Jolie raked in $27 million in the past 12 months thanks to a movie schedule that included "Kung Fu Panda," "Wanted" and the not-yet-released spy thriller "Salt." Even more impressive: The publicity she garnered following the birth of her twins, as well as the consistent headlines she grabs for her philanthropic efforts and her relationship with actor Brad Pitt, who ranks No. 9 on the list.

Thanks to the release of several blockbuster movies and an endless sea of media buzz, Jolie has dethroned Oprah Winfrey to top this year's Celebrity 100 list, Forbes' annual ranking of the world's ultra famous.

In a year filled with humbling bank failures and violent stock market swings, the earning power of the 2009 Celebrity 100 remained remarkably resilient. The cumulative earnings of the 2009 list totaled $4.1 billion, up slightly from last year's $4 billion haul.

The primary reason celebrities are still making big money: Many stars are locked into long-term performance and endorsement contracts. If the economy does not improve, expect the downturn to catch up to the A-list next year.
Rounding out the top five on the list are pop icon Madonna ($110 million), singer Beyonce Knowles ($87 million), and golfer Tiger Woods ($110 million).

Comic-Con Celebrates Its 40th Year

Comic-Con's 40th looks to be the biggest and best convention ever! It's not too early to start planning for Comic-Con 2009! Roaring back into the San Diego Convention Center July 23–26 —- with the popular Preview Night on Wednesday, July 22.
It all started in 1970 with a one-day minicon (think of it as "Comic-Con Zero") at the U.S. Grant Hotel in downtown San Diego. The first guests were Forrest J Ackerman (Famous Monsters of Filmland's famous editor) and Mike Royer, best known for his work inking Jack Kirby's "Fourth World" books. That one-day event tested the waters -— and raised funds —- for the first ever San Diego Comic-Con (then called "San Diego's West Coast Comic-Con") in August of the same year, which featured comics legend Jack Kirby and science fiction authors Ray Bradbury and A. E. van Vogt. And the rest, as they say, is history -— including Kirby, Bradbury, and Ackerman going on to become three of Comic-Con's favorite guests over the years (both Ray and Forry were present again in 2008).

That first show and its logo set the groundwork for what would become, over the next 39 years, the country's leading comics and popular arts convention. From the very beginning the event has focused on "comic art, films, and science fiction."

As we gear up over the coming months to celebrate the momentous 40th convention, you'll learn a lot more about Comic-Con's exciting history, from those early days through the "Toucan years" (when Rick Geary's colorful bird was Comic-Con's mascot and logo), up to the present day. 2009 promises to be another amazing year.

Susan Boyle Collapse

Susan Boyle, who became a global star when a clip of her singing was viewed 100 million times on YouTube, has been rushed to a health clinic suffering from exhaustion, reports said Monday.

A 48-year-old spinster -- whose rendition of "I Dreamed a Dream" from the musical Les Miserables brought her worldwide acclaim -- was taken to the Priory clinic in London on Sunday.

On Saturday night, Boyle came second in the "Britain's Got Talent" television competition that made her famous, despite being the favorite.

In the days leading up to the final, media reports suggested she was having trouble coping with the weight of expectations on her.
"Following Saturday night's show, Susan is exhausted and emotionally drained," talkbackThames said in a statement.

"She has been seen by her private GP (doctor) who supports her decision to take a few days out for rest and recovery. We offer her our ongoing support and wish her a speedy recovery."

Boyle had been under huge pressure to win "Britain's Got Talent" on Saturday after her audition piece became a major hit on video-sharing website YouTube. However, after a public vote she lost out to a street dancing troupe.
